The vast majority of students at this school are children of first-generation Russian-speaking immigrants who arrived in the Golden State from Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, and other CIS countries. The thing is, most immigrants do not want their offspring to forget their native language, completely blending in with the local population. That is why parents send their children to a charter school where they immerse themselves in the study of science in a bilingual environment. (And the school's after-school program even offers Ukrainian language classes). "I believe that our children should remain bilingual," says the school's director, Larisa Gonchar, "people of high culture and great knowledge. As you can see, we put our hearts into our children."
